Wonderful- a new photobucket format to relearn...anyway, here's some pics of the 18' boxcar...yell if you want some other kind of angle taken and I'll do it.
-bottom end detail

-roof

-floor has a wash or something on it...nice

-car end...no, I didn't add the brake wheel yet, that's why it's not there.

...the optional doors are shown in the last pic.

GE exported qite a few narrow gauge diesel engines, but I think most were of the 42" rail width...I'm trying out a class 91 NG engine for my GP40 HO chassis.
The UM10B, U6B...and the like could be suited towards an On30 modern engine...at least I'm going to try one.

Just for reference sake, this is the 1st drawing of my On30 diesel project...a late 50s to early 60s GE export- class 91 engine....I'm looking to build something, timewise, that could've ran with the steamer I have. I'm thinking the new body will offer up enough room but I'd take your thoughts on that too-

The lightly red shaded area is the HO GP40 chassis.
Here's the link if you'd like to laugh, comment, critique, or simply follow along...

Royce, give me alittle bit and I'll post some pics for us...and I'd lean more towards outside frame engines, but that's always been my liking.

While waiting for the new year to come, I started messing with what a body would look like over the chassis. This is a drawing of a GE class 91...I kind of like the lil hood on it.

The trucks are crude in the drawing since the emphasis is on how the body fits over the chassis and I'd probably keep the EMD side frames for ease of the build. "If" my conversion specs are correct and the line drawing was right, this is what I got. You'll note I drew up a 7' and an 8' cab width...according to my conversion of metric and by the line drawing the cab was to come in at 8' 4" realtime...I knocked it down to 8' on the one drawing to simply round things up. I kind of like the 8' cab width.
I really wanted to do the UM10B but the large flat area in front of the cab is too hard to do since the drive assembly would get in the way...the frame could be redone, but that truck drive can't - unless I really fudged the body longer to accomodate that.
Ok, thoughts/critisms/opinions on this one with either cab.....I've got 1-2 more to draw up yet...this is just one idea of a semi modern engine- if you'd call late 50s to early 60s a modern motive power.

Thanks for the input Joe. Oh, my GP40 runs LEDs....maybe its a new thing...don't know.

Hey Don, my intent was to simply "add" sound to the existing DCC board rather than swap the whole thing out...but I could pending options.
I find it hard to believe that bachmann doesn't supply an 8 pin plug on the DCC equipted for ease of adding on a sound board...I think they're missing the boat here by not doing so, the addition of a sound board via them or they're supplier could be an easy revenue maker for those who wish to add on afterwards...look at Aristocraft{yeah, wrong scale - I know}...one can buy a silent diesel and add sound via a simple plug and play board and viola...sound....while bachmann caters to a few different scales they could have this added income too if they set it up right. Hope someone is listening....it would work well for all of us....

General Discussion / Re: Electronic circuits for trains

They still use popsicle sticks for G scale lighting boards...cool!
I can see the 5v constant lighting circuit as being very usable, but it'd be better to use track power via truck pick-ups and a large a heatsink as one could use instead of battery power. In this day and age one can get a multitude of different voltage/color LEDs for rail car or building lighting but to use a low voltage starting point makes for better rail car lighting but that comes at a higher heat dissipation need when the voltage goes up...in HO/On30 that wouldn't be so bad but G scale does get higher. He's got alot of G scale projects there, but those can be downsized for smaller scales I'd bet.
For building lighting the use of 12v LEDs and a resistor, along with a bridge rectifier for those who run AC power, can be an easy way to go...they're long lasting and compact.

I haven't played with anything like this for eons - 555 timers for engine and caboose strobes, car constant lighting, IR sensors for action lights{crossings}....looks like I need to play again...thanks for the link!

I bought a pair from "favoritespot" on ebay and got them last week...very nice! I was eyeballing these and the kits from Boulder valley, but went with the bachmanns since they were complete - BV's don't have trucks and couplers as part of the car kit - I wanted ready rolling. Anyone spy the "optional doors" on the r/h side of the foam...."framed doors"...there's a paper in with those doors on how to install them.
Ya gotta love Bachmann for once again giving us options for the On30 offerings they have out....heck, I just found there's an optional snow plow for my railbus last week...guess I didn't dig enough when I 1st got it!

Anyone want pics of the lil boxcars...theres some on the web, but I'd be happy to post some here if anyone would like...

I did the search and found some old posts on adding sound to a bachmann DCC installed engine, but to me it was kind of unclear as to whether all were DCC already and just adding sound and that those sound cards were what was available back then{up to 2yr old posts}...what's out there now, what do you folks use and like, and how easy was it to install? I see now that ponying up the extra money for the DCC/sound engine would've been an easier choice...hind site is always 20/20 isn't it, but I got this #60303 onboard DCC GP40 for only $38 so adding sound now to this one will be a new learned lesson for me. I also have an On30 railbus that needs sound too so this needs to happen one engine or the other.
As a side note my GP40 chassis is part of an On30 kitbash so I can add more room in the new body I'm going to make, to an extent, for a speaker and sound board. I can read a multi meter and solder so I think I can handle this task. Long ago, when I had G scale trains I made low voltage LED lighting and strobe boards for my trains...I don't have to "make" anything for a sound install, so I should be ok.

Here, I'll make my reference pic finding easy for you-
The UM10B idea-

...there you can see the open area in front of the cab that I kind of like....
Here is the other idea...that's the UM6B-

Here's a DE601 -

Guess I'm on a GE kick lately...
...oh, and for your or my reference sake, I did just find this on the web...no line drawings but it has the basic specs given which helps- this is the GE section but you could backtrack thru it to find others!

I spent most of the afternoon yesterday researching narrow gauge diesels and got the "nod" on a few of them from my son...this, by no means, means that the search is over. We here seem to like the export GE's at the moment....the GE UM6B tops the chart at this momnet in time along with the GE UM10B. The UM10B pic that I have has quite a bit of realistate in front of the cab and that would interfere with the inner workings just a bit, but then again, most proposed engines will no doubt have some sort of issue like that...I/we are looking for "something close".
The fact that I'm limited to the use of the supplied EMD trucks will make most engine ideas off the wall, so to speak, anyway...this is more for fun, as I stated in the beginning, but I'm going to try and make it believable too.
Another engine my son liked was a LeW DE IIS...."that looks like a strong one dad"

The biggest problem I'm facing is the lack of line drawings for these and alot of engines...the main body length can be shortened or even stretched to fit over the inner chassis, but "height" is what I need a reference to...so what sounds good for cab height....6'....7'....8'.......? Ideas?

Dear Q,
Try this site:

Scroll down for the diesels.
Happy New Year!
the Bach-man

Admin/B-man, I sent an email off to them about the realtime size of they're #18 seires bodies to see if it would fit but haven't heard back from them as of yet.
While your looking, can a Bachmann sound card be added "after the fact" with this chassis, or am I commited to another source? It's a #60303 with DCC on board...but no sound....yet.

Hi,
I've scratch this with a GP40... for the fun :)

Neat, is that just a "reCab"...I saw the dynamic brakes and then quickly noticed the exhaust stack thru it and that's when it hit me that you may have used the main body plus a new cab.

Hello Burlington

I'm about to start this bash:

http://sbiii.com/rrpix/Ircodemo.jpg

It could also fit your GP40 body I guess...

Best regards from Switzerland

Bas
Nice, an old boxcab, I showed my son that one and the CLW 400hp version but he said they look too old...everyone's a critic...he wants something close to a shortened F40 that "looks strong"...this is why I'm here for ideas!
