My bachmann On30 engines with DCC and sound are leaving my O scale engines kind of flat now...thanks bachmann{hahaha}, so this other guy and I, on another board, are chatting back and forth about higher amp DCC boards and what to control them with...I have my dynamis and he has his NCE{I think}. I'm wondering if I got the dynamis booster{5amp?} if this would run an O scale engine, on 3 rail, with a 5 or so amp DCC board with sounds, well enough.
For you who have a hard time thinking about "3 rail" as workable, remember, the 2 outside rails are common...think "1", with the center rail as the "other feed"...sort of the same thing as 2 rail, but with 3 rails.

Anyone ever try they're large scale...O/G...on a dynamis with the given engine running DCC?

Can it be done...has it been done...should it be done - yes..I think, so long as it won't burn out my dynamis{power output wise}.

Thru a search tonight under "O scale DCC" I spy that Weaver is supposed to be getting into O scale DCC...I can't see why O scale can't have DCC...even saw a place called procraft that has 3.5 amp Tsunami boards...same thing as HO boards but higher amp capability for the engine.

Bachman...anyone...?

My GP40 came with dcc on board...no sound. I have the TSU-AT1000 Tsunami dcc/sound board to go in but I see the two resistors down by the motor and have to wonder if those stay or get removed...those were there with the bachman dcc...when this one is done I have an SD40-2 with dcc/ob that needs sound too...both engines are On30 chassis projects.

Some of you may question the EMD 567 choice, but it was my 7yr old son who picked it out because he liked the sound....what am I gonna do...say no?

Found an ebay auction for one of the really old bachmann 44 ton switchers with the dual slot car type motors - not a central can motor. Though it hums rather loudly on the EZ command control{in channel 10 of course} It does actually run fairly nice. My thoughts were for it to become an On30 engine or to split the two trucks and make two rail cars...now for my question...is this type of power train worth it...with the separate truck motors...to add DCC or DCC/sound?
Also, though there's two diodes on the light board, the body lights don't reverse with direction...common for back then, or possible diode issues?
The more I look at this chassis, the more I can see a lil mack railbus with one of these power trucks as the power source for that...the reason why I bought it.
Thanks in advance for any input....
...back to my other On30 project-

I did the search and found some old posts on adding sound to a bachmann DCC installed engine, but to me it was kind of unclear as to whether all were DCC already and just adding sound and that those sound cards were what was available back then{up to 2yr old posts}...what's out there now, what do you folks use and like, and how easy was it to install? I see now that ponying up the extra money for the DCC/sound engine would've been an easier choice...hind site is always 20/20 isn't it, but I got this #60303 onboard DCC GP40 for only $38 so adding sound now to this one will be a new learned lesson for me. I also have an On30 railbus that needs sound too so this needs to happen one engine or the other.
As a side note my GP40 chassis is part of an On30 kitbash so I can add more room in the new body I'm going to make, to an extent, for a speaker and sound board. I can read a multi meter and solder so I think I can handle this task. Long ago, when I had G scale trains I made low voltage LED lighting and strobe boards for my trains...I don't have to "make" anything for a sound install, so I should be ok.

On30 / What On30 diesel do I want to make?
December 29, 2012, 11:16:56 AM
Well, we here are in need of an On30 diesel for the roster and I just got our donor chassis, a bachmann GP40 w/dcc...was only $38 so the price was right. I just contacted Mount blue about they're diesel body size{s} to see if they'll fit over the slightly longer chassis -  they suggest an S4 switch chassis and by looking at my modelrailroader vol2 diesel locomotive drawings the GP40 runs alittle longer than the sugggested SW/S4.
In the mean time I'm looking for ideas of what to scratch in case those bodies won't easily work...what's some good ideas folks....I'm not a rivet counter so prototype correct isn't a neccesity...we just want a decent looking diesel.
I do have a williams FM trainmaster O scale shell, but that would be alot of cutting to narrow and shorten her up...it'd probably be easier to just scratch a new body I'm thinking....

On30 / 2-6-6-2 wood tender load...anyone install it?
December 19, 2012, 03:22:14 PM
My son has requested that the 2-6-6-2 steamer be wood fired, so I removed the coal load {even though we're going to be pulling 6 "coal hoppers" behind it....hey, I'm just the hired help} and wondered if it's just supposed to sit on the bottom edge of that resin casting, or are we supposed to sand that thinner for a better look. I've just finished a black wash to add depth to the wood load stack or I'd toss up a pic of that bottom edge "step" all the way around the wood load casting.
Anyone?....

I just acquired an O scale FM trainmaster shell which I plan on shortening to fit onto an HO scale DCC chassis for our On30 railroad...obviously a whimsical concept that my son and I came up with as he wants some diesel power for our roster aside from the On30 2-6-6-2 steamer and railbus we have.

What type of plastic is the shell made of so I can find the right bonding agent to glue the cut shell back together when done.
Styrene, ABS.....Anyone.....?

My 7yr old son and I are planning a layout together and I want an outer loop of 3 rail O scale, A middle loop of On30 and a small intererban line of On30. For the outer loop of 3 rail O scale we plan on running an MTH Zephyr w/protot2{1st version}, a Lionel GP9{regular AC} and/or my wife's K-line 4-6-2 Coke steam engine. The middle loop of On30 is planned for our newly aquired Bachmann 2-6-6-2 and the intererban route is planned for our Bachmann railbus.
My MTH Zephyr{O} and the Bachmann 2-6-6-2{On30} have sound and I'd like to get that used...maybe I can add sound to the Lionel GP9 and K-line steamer and the Bachmann railbus.....I currently have 2 Lionel CL80s and a Bachmann EZ DCC for power...both low end units simply for basic usage....I"m looking for a controller{s} that will run the sound well off of the DCC units and my MTH 3Rail Zephyr...is there such a unit that can do that? and can it run 3 rail AC. I'm probably asking too much here, but if I can get a lead on a better solution I'd go with it. Is it possible to run 2 different controllers for a line- one DCC and one AC{as I recall the MTH should be able to run DC or AC}?
Thanks for your time and looking-
