HO / Re: Rotary switch
December 20, 2007, 09:51:39 AM
Hobo,
Yes, I am using Walthers 90' turntable. I was looking for a way to turn of the tracks in the roundhouse without having to use a lot of toggles or push button switches. On the rotary switch you just have to turn to the number on the switch that matches the track. I think that is what I am trying to do. Thanks

I am in the process of building Walthers roundhouse and would like to use a rotary switch to control the tracks power. I have DeMar Electronics cat. and there are several types of rotary switches. They have several and all have a AMP Current rating. I was wandering which one I should use because I am using DCC? I was told I need a double pole for this. I also need at least 17 positions and they are rated at 9 Amp current rating on contacts. I am not sure exactly all that means. I just need some of your input. Thanks. Merry Christmas. Larry

derail, a lot of guys gave you a lot of grief and could have been more gentle. The key to everything you do to run nice smooth trains is make that track work as smooth as you possibly can. Do what ever it takes and what ever method that works to get the roadbed smooth. I work on a club layout that did not have good bench work. It was solid but they did not have it very smooth. I have used everything from foam to drywall hot mud to cark stock to get the track smooth. Merry Christmas. Larry

Brad,
You got the plaster cloth at a great price. I have built two very huge mountains with the plaster cloth only I used strips of cardboard to make my frame. One suggestion I would add to the rest is to take newspaper and lay it over your chicken wire and then wet it down so it will lay nice. If you lay serveral layers of newspaper it will protect your track under your mountain, at least it did for me. I did not get one drop of plaster on my track. I also cut the plaster cloth in about 12" lengths and then I had a pan that I used for big paint rollers to paint houses with. It is about 36X18 and about 10" deep, and I filled it with water and with just one simple dip of the cloth through the water and on to the mountain. I was able to do that in a short time and it was easy for me. I even had my wife dipping the cut up sheets and handing it to me and that worked great. Then after it dried I put another coat of plaster over the harded plaster cloth as Jim suggested. That cloth is great and is fast and I highly recommend it very much. Good luck and Merry Christmas Larry

Jim and Dave thanks for the input. I am basically modling PA my home state but with a lot of latitude. I try to get all of PA I can but if I find some others I like I purchase them. If I am going to put money into sound I sure do not want the hum Dave is talking about. If there is not sound  that is good for the  0-8-0 I will just install a decoder.
I have another question Jim. I have an 0-6-0 and have the sound decoder ready to install but they tell you to replace the lights. Do you know what kind of lights you would try to get? It too is a Proto 2000. Thanks Guys. Larry

There is water a lot better then Woodland scenics. The product is called "EZ Waters" and it works great. It is the best water product on the market. It is easy to mix (has two parts) you don't have to deal with air bubbles like Woodland scenics "Realistic Water". The price is anywhere from $25 to $29 and worth every penny. I have used both products and "EZ Water" is the best thing on the market. ONce it cures (24 hours) you would have no problem with it leaning up aganist the wall. The best place I got mine was from Walthers or Blue Ridge Hobbies. Both can be found on the Internet. Hope this helps

I just got four new Bachman Sharknose engines and they run great. I was wandering how PRR numbered their Sharks? I know were to put the numbers on the A units but where do you put them on the B units. Thanks for your help. Larry

Thanks for the pictures. By the way did you use cork road bed under the track? I didn't think I saw any and I was wandering if using the cork roadbed the tracks would not match up with the turntable. Keep up the good work. Sometime in the future explain in detail how you indexed the turntable; maybe in simpler terms than Walthers instruction sheet. Thanks Larry

Jim,
You have my sympathy and blessings a -3!!!! I lived in NY for seven years and it got to 30 below a couple of times so It must really get low there. Hey be the way I have all my switches in so I was wandering if an Atlas snap relay would to the trick? If it would how do you wire it. Thanks Jim and stay warm. Don't forget when it gets real cold and you need a break come to sunny Alabama and spend a week in our motor home for a vacation. Larry
