HO / Re: Military cars
January 09, 2011, 01:34:27 AM
Model Power makes the most military cars,, but none with a chopper.

http://www.modelpower.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=148&Page=1

Bachmann makes several depressed center flat cars with tactical missiles. Be carefull with these, these just might have nuclear warheads.do not Drop. ;D

Athearn has some flats with airplanes out
http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/HO-Scale-Flat-Cars-s/1492.htm?searching=Y&sort=3&cat=1492&show=16&page=1&search=%20plane

Mr Banner has a good idea about making your own with a helicopter.
The trick is finding a model helicopter in 1/87 scale.  Finding ANY aircraft in 1/87th scale is difficult at best,,when
99% of all model aircraft are made in every scale there is except 1/87.
most common you will find would be 1/72 scale,
just a bit too large,,but if you are OK with that,,then by all means proceed! ;D

HO / Re: Overland Express limited not staying on track
January 07, 2011, 09:37:43 PM
The Overland set i bought 3 years ago came with 22R.
The 4-8-4 that came in my set does not even notice the difference between 18R and 22R.
It has lots of slop in it,,like a AK-47,,my experience tells me it is not curve radius.

IT* is fussy about rail joiners not correctly joined, look at your track at the rail joiners Very Carefully.
Sometimes when connecting the track the rail does not go into the railjoiner, usually up and over it  making a bump and it is not always obvious to the eye when setting the track up.
You can run the train one way and it will not derail but you will hear the wheels bump, after they go uphill and come back down onto the track.
Run the train the other way and will derail as if it hit something, like the blunt end of the other rail of the next section.

One way to test is to simply use your finger tip at every rail joint. Run you finger tip over the joint, it should be relatively smooth.
You will feel the bump when you come across it.  The rails are uneven.Just pull the sections apart then reconnect them more carefully, keeping your eye on the joiners.

* But then so are all locos and rolling stock about misaligned railjoints.

General Discussion / Re: Wiper on tank car

I have one of these Bachmann track cleaneing cars and it does do a good basic job keeping the track clean.
When the pad gets dirty you can remove the pad and put it a dishwasher to clean it. Use the silverware basket.
Just run the washer with a load of dishes. wait for it dry then reinstall on the car.

The pins that hold the pad to the trucks are small,,when removing the pins i Highly Suggest that you place a white
towel on your lap,,if you drop the pin,,the pin will most likely land on the towel instead of vanishing on the floor or even worse, the carpet if you have one.
If fact the towel on your lap trick works great whenever you work with any small parts.

January 05, 2011, 06:05:37 PM
use  4 or 5 drops of fluid.
Run the loco at 75% of full throttle or greater.
Should start to see smoke after 2 minutes give or take.

Jb,

are those available in code 100?

It does not look like it,,this is where you can see the list of track parts,,just put the curser on the word TRACK on the upper left and a drop down menu will appear, i am sure you will figure the rest out from there.

are there any turnout that are made with 22" radius track or are they only 18" radius?

kris

Yes. Atlas makes these, both Snap track and Truetrack. They are 22R switches.
Truetrack part numbers 482,483,484 and 485
Snap Track part numbers  544,545,546 and 547.

These are all code 83 track.

What kind of track are you using anyway?  That part is not clear to me at least.

Q:Second:What about converting the front coupler to a operating one?

This is possible,in theory, but will require some carefull & exacting surgery.
You will have to cut out the dummy coupler. Cut out enough to make room for the replacement pocket.
Then replace it with either a Kadee #5 or #148, your call, along with the coupler pocket provided in the Kadee kit.

HO / Re: CSX 3 and 4 Bay HO Hoppers...any 6 packs made
December 25, 2010, 12:23:57 PM
6 packs from Bachmann? Never seen one.
The most Bachmann does is two of the same roadname with different road numbers. There are 2,3, and 4 bays available. At least one is a 4 bay in CSX.

Atlas Trainman recently released 70ton 3bay hoppers, Chessie System C&O and B&O,,these sell out fast so happy hunting.

Coal-porters, they are the latest and greatest coal hoppers.
Go to a coal powered electricity plant and you will most likely see lots of the porters.
Porters are most likely used to deliver coal to the mill.
The 2,3, and 4 bay hoppers are much older,,my best Guess is the ones you see are used strictly for moving coke, a coal by product, around the yard of the mill, again that is my best guess.

HO / Re: Steam Engine
December 25, 2010, 12:12:48 PM
Just put about 4 drops of fluid down the smoke stack.
Then run the loco at 75% or higher for about a minute or two and it should start to work.
Have a dry towel handy, some times the smoke fluid will spit out of the stack, use the towel to clean off the loco.
Best towel would be like an old t-shirt, or t-shirt like cloth.
Use the same towel plus some alcohol to clean the track afterwards too.

HO / Re: gear grease
December 24, 2010, 12:43:47 PM
Did it need to be stirred up like paint that has been sitting a Long time?
Was it hot in the room?  Chemical breakdown over time perhaps?

I recently went to a hobby shop looking for Bachmanns conductive lube. They had one.
The bottle had been sitting there unsold for so long the bottle was EMPTY.  The same thing with the other
bottles of Bachmann lubes they had,all empty, the blister packages were unopened, they had been sitting there for so long.  Must have leaked or evaporated out,,well Something happened.  Next time i went there all were pulled from the shelves.

There are other greases,,La Belle comes to mind,,i am sure others will have some good input too.
