HO / Baldwin 4-4-0 Project
January 01, 2016, 04:08:57 PM
Bought two of em last weekend, B&O 1400 (which I noticed has a different boiler/dome arrangement) and an Undec, turned the undec into Strasburg 98 as seen below. I know its not 100% accurate, but well i'm not a nit picker and I needed another engine to pull some of the Strasburg Coaches i have.

Nevermind, I just winged it and thankfully didn't mess it up. I've drilled into plastic before but this was my first time doing diecast metal.

HO / Undec Baldwin 4-4-0 Bell How To
December 26, 2015, 12:11:12 PM
I have a pin vice and drill set, I've used it to drill plastic but not metal, is it possible or do I have to use my Dremel to drill through the boiler to mount the bell? I also noticed the dome placements are different then on the B&O one that I got as well.

Thanks.

If there's room, add some weight on each side evenly.

HO / Is it possible...?
December 05, 2015, 10:59:22 AM
Is it possible, to turn a 50t 2 truck climax into a Forney? I'd leave the tender truck in place and remove the drive shaft and get em free rolling.

I have 4 of the older Climaxes and all have internal cracked gears so thats how this project has came up in thought. I'll convert all 4 of em to Forneys and my plan is to take some IHC/mehano 0-4-0 chassis and install them under the exsisting frame to create an 2-4-4 Forney. using the Climax motor and boiler and what have you. I can't figure out how to open up a climax to see what the inners look like to see how possible the idea is.

Suggestions on this idea?

I've got one of these sets. Very nice, the Obs car has a portrait of George Washington on it.  There is Photos of the engine that i can remember on my collections fb page. At the moment i can't remember if i have a pic of the obs on there or not. link to the page below in my signature.

I like to go to train shows, but I don't expect to find much I can use or want to buy.  Sometimes, though, one can come up with real good buys.

Once, I found a PA-1 ABBA set in actually "like new" condition for a very good price.  Only one A unit was powered, but it alone was worth the price.

Another time, I found a switcher I was looking for in "new old stock" condition.  At the original price!

Dealers sometimes sell new stock that are slow sellers.  This is a good source for hard to find items at a reduced price.

I don't go in expecting to find any real bargains.  But it happens often enough to be worth going.  It is usually worth the price of admission to see the layouts and talk with fellow modelers.

Les

I got to a show 3-4 times a year(same one just happens 4 times a year) and while I useally never intend to find good deals, last show i found a GREAT deal. Last two of the Roundhouse Overlands for Strasburg RR I needed for my set...only catch was i had to buy all three the guy had to get em at $20 ea......I've paid 45-60 each on eBay and the two I got from Strasburg RR itself.

Now back to topic......the Big Boy has been done to death. infact ANOTHER run is about to be produced.
Lots of steam not done, or has been poorly done/details that can be done.

I give credit to Bachmann, they are trying stuff not done  before, or hasn't been done in a long time....hopefully next year the trend contiunes with stuff like camelbacks, or even an Atlantic.

Trying to get the answers I need from the parts department is making my head spin. I e-mailed them before about when the parts department will get the newer upgraded parts for the 2 truck climax now that they were re-run. All I got was "Yes the parts are interchangeable with the older runs" But I didn't get an answer if or when they would be avaliable. I got 4 of these things, all 4 need the same parts, Front Truck(will the 70 ton 3 truck front truck work?), rear truck and the complete drive line from the gearbox to the trucks. I'm getting ready to re-decorate the models and I get sick of seeing them on the sidelines. so thanks for any help.

I keep and eye out at train shows for the Rivarossi S-1's at something approaching a reasonable price.  My goal is to mate the superstructure to an IHC 2-10-2 that has the right size drivers and runs much better than the Rivarossis ever did.  I agree it would be great if Bachmann did one, but they did the USRA Light which is more generic and can be lettered for a number of differnt roads.

I did that with two of em, IHC Chassis, Rivarossi shell. I used bachmann vanderbuilt tenders though.

I can't wait to see Jonathan deconstruct a USRA mike - Hmmm - let me guess - it'll become a B&O loco!

That won't be much!  B&O had 100 of them in class Q3.  The original of the class, and the first USRA engine of any type delivered, B&O 4500, is preserved today in the B&O Museum in Baltimore.  Main changes would be a  high headlight, footboard pilot, the ususal plumbing changes over time, and the deep roofed cab (which the engine has now, and apparently got fairly early in its life).

What would be more interesting would be to make it into a Q4.  B&O had a bunch of those, and dimensionally and proportionally they look a lot like a USRA--but what a host of changes!  Domes look different, I think the smokebox front is different, cast trailing truck (which is an option on Bachmann's model), long frame Baker valve gear, and a stubby medium Vanderbilt tank!

That would be a challenge!

Did someone say B&O Q3 4500?

Pic by me on my last trip down to the museum/kiddy amusement park. Its hard to get decent pics of her as shes tucked inside the passenger car shops behind the 5300. its a bit tight in there though i could get a better shot on the other side but theres a platform so you can get up into the cabs of the 2-6-6-6 and 4-6-2.

N&W / Strasburg 4-8-0 WITHOUT Dcc/sound

I'm not a N&W modeler but I would like to have 3 N&W 4-8-0's on my roster with the 16k water buffalo tender ;D

N&W Water Buffalo tenders seem to be really popular on online auction sites and used on a variety of roads. With the popularity of N&W as an eastern road, I'm surprised we don't see more plastic/diecast steam. If Bachmann made a Y-2, Z-1, M-1 or M-2 sign me up for few of any of those.

I'd like to get one for my Strasburg RR, also wouldn't mind 1 or 2 for a fantasy engine for my B&O RR.

I thought there would be a lot more excitement about the return of this engine.

I'm happy they're back, as I'm trying to get the correct tender for one of the two high boilers i have(tender at one time was considered damage beyond use, but now is used behind a 2-8-0)

And I'm somewhat happy to see some newer roadnames, but the one i'm most interested in comes only with DCC & Sound (the C&O one) The B&O one, I already have 4 of those, 2 low boiler, 2 high boiler.

HO / Re: Official 2015 Announcements

Disapointment again. Only one item I'll probably get out of this set of announcements, thats the old time tank car B&O, and Philidelphia & Reading. Price pending I may get some of the 40' Box cars

I was hoping to see the C&O 377 in HO Scale, and it is being done. But with DCC & Sound only...I don't do sound,  and for those wondering "why not just take the sound out?" Why pay for it if i'm not going to use it? Chances are it's not plug an play so I wont beable to re-sell the sound decoder.......seems to be a trend past couple of announcements. Some roads get DCC & Sound only while some roads get DCC Ready. I do see that a B&O 4-6-0 is being done without sound, I may get one, and use one of my two custom made ones for another road. I haven't made up my mind on that one yet.
