I would love to be able to get the Bachmann On30 tenders separately

I talked to Chris Lane (theOn30 Annual man, and I'm going to go ahead and try to put something together...

by far the most challenging part was the pilot, I ended up cutting too much and rebuilding the area with JB Weld   :'(

the big problem is that the photos are pretty cruddy, and when I went back to them after not seeing them for a few months I found many didn't make any sense either

but I'll post what I can but it may be a week or two before I can get it done  :-\

maybe I can disassemble the loco for some better pictures

Hello,

I'm waiting to hear back from the Annual's editor to see how they feel about me posting some more pictures of the project...

meanwhile, this is what it looks like now:

it's not a hard project, but it requires some "creative engineering" and maybe a willingness to break out a hack saw :D

I think the point is many real 30" narrow gauge railroads used cars much longer than the short cars that many in the "mini railroad mafia" seem to demand that everyone in On30 use ;)

there is no mechanical reason longer cars won't run on model railroad sized 20" radius curves, under-body detail may have to be compromised, but I think to most people that is much less noticeable than compressing a car length. The Bachmann scale 35 foot passenger cars operate happily on 18" radius curves and no-one seems to object to them, so I don't understand the hue and cry on the internet when a manufacturer offers something bigger than the typical "undersized"** On30 offering...

if the visual aspects of longer cars on curves less than 30" bother you that's one thing, but to say that is a requirement for proper operation is quite another

**by undersized I mean in economically practical terms, for instance, what real railroad CFO would understand buying or building 16' stock cars that could only transport 3 or 4 head of cattle?

do you have to use a thomas engine or can you use another ho 4-6-0?

I'm sure a lot of different HO locos would work...I used an IHC 4-6-2 in another 4-6-0 conversion...

I choose the Thomas engine because it was cheap, didn't have oversize flanges and it had larger pilot wheels than any of the HO locos I've looked at before...

I got a copy of the On30 Annual yesterday and  it looks like they didn't have enough room for more of the constructions pictures (or more likely they couldn't work with my "iffy" pictures  :-\ ) ...so I'll try and put together a web page for those that are interested...

hi, there used to be a link in my sugnature to some completed pictures of a couple of my 4-6-0s...but it looks like signatures are turned off (probably a good thing)...

anyway here's the link: http://webpages.charter.net/mransr/trains.htm (boy I REALLY need to update my website...ah well)

Thanks...I built the 4-6-0 ;)

I really like the way it came out and I can't wait to see the article (haven't got my On30 Annual yet)

I also built an SP style 4-6-0 from an On30 2-6-0...it was A LOT more work  ;)

Yes, small they are, but they are still 3-foot locos with outside driving wheels - just plunking them on On30 track would make them look ridiculous... sort of a green bicicle...  ;D the 2-6-0 barely makes into the 30" gauge league (would have to have its drivers reduced to 33" to look OK) and the 2-8-0 is a universal loco, good for anything from 30" to 42" gauge but which only makes the smaller gauge by dint of being a outside-frame loco (read low center of gravity). And just putting O scale hardware on a HO 4-6-0 IMHO will make a loco suitable only for a fairground ride... I'm thinking of a loco lying between the 4-4-0 and the 2-6-0 in size, with all the proper hardware.

Cheers Nicholas

some mighty bold statements there...seems to be some confusion with fact versus opinion  :-[

many people think there are a lot of 3' prototype locos that work just fine on 31.25" track thankyouverymuch...if you personally don't want or like that, that's fine, but to say it looks ridiculous is pretty narrow minded (pardon the pun)

in size, a "typical" 3' gauge 4-6-0 would fall right between the 2-6-0 and the Bachmann or MMI 2-8-0, again not unreasonable compared to the Bachmann freight and passenger cars

and O scale hardware on an HO 4-6-0 would not be any more or less "fairground sized" than the forthcoming 4-4-0 (in fact that is what that sized loco is referred to in the Baldwin catalogue...)

if you're interested this is what an On30 4-6-0 might look like:

IMO the oversize Peco ties look a lot odder than the 3' sized loco on rails 4 3/4 inches too narrow ;)

I don't see why the Tweesie (or RGS) 4-6-0 would need to be "scaled down"?...it's not like they are gigantic loco's...maybe just between the 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 in size

if one wants a "scaled down" 4-6-0, it'd be pretty darn simple to but an O scale cab and stack on a Bcahmann HO scale 4-6-0 and end up with something that would match up pretty well with the forthcoming 4-4-0...

Hi Melinda
Well it looks like you got your wish after all. Wow! could you turn some of that wish power on a newer two truck shay.
Happy railroading
shayman

not if her wish was the large scale 4-4-0 in On30  :'(

I just saw the new paint schemes Bachmann is offering on the large scale 4-4-0 BEAUTIFUL!!!!...I sure wish that was the loco they decided to offer in On30  :-\

August 05, 2007, 04:22:37 PM
here is what I wrote:

[the cab] is held on by just one screw up from the boiler, the trick was getting to the screw. The boiler is attached by two screws under the ash pan cover and one screw between the cylinders, it’s also held in place by a bunch of piping. I began by pulling the pilot deck braces loose from the smoke box, removing the 3 screws then slowly and carefully lifting the boiler and pulling the pipes loose one at a time; the exploded view that comes with the loco was very helpful here.

hope that helps

FYI here is what turned out like:

I wrote a small article on replacing the cab on the O/F 2-8-0 for the 2007 On30 Annual http://www.on30annual.com/ ...but I forgot how I did it  ???  I know the cab is attached with a screw up though the boiler...

let me find the mag and refresh my memory and I'll let you know what I did ;)

Wow, that is homely! Almost attractive in its way, not going to be on my layout. Happy for those of you who wanted a 4-4-0. Was hoping for a Heisler. Guess I will have to wait another year. Sure hope I'm still here. Rod

(note: the rant below is based on the new 4-4-0 being similar to the Mt. Gretna loco...if it's not [Roseanne Rosannadanna voice]never mind [/Roseanne Rosannadanna voice]  ;) )

IMHO, that looks more like something cobbled together from a too-small HO loco than something one would buy "new in a box"...

and I can't speak for anyone but myself...but that is no closer to being the kind of 4-4-0 I'd be willing to buy than it is to the Heilser you're after...

it certainly appears Bachmann has given up on the "budget 3-foot gauge" aspect of On30...I guess that's good for the Maine/industrial/and maybe logging modelers...but outside of some variations on the freight cars, there hasn't been anything new for us western types since the original Mogul freight and passenger sets...

I really hope that there are enough people happy with the new 4-4-0 to make Bachmann enough money to keep 'em in the game...I just wish they'd occasional "dance with the one that brung 'em"   :'(

and that's all I have to say on the subject...I keep quiet until the next announcement

Dear All,
The announcements are posted. Our 4-4-0 will be very similar to the Mt. Gretna Narrow Gauge locomotive I hope we'll have pictures soon. The samples are at the show.
Have fun!
the Bach-man

for any of you that have some Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette's around there are some pictures of Mallory Ferrell's model of the Mt. Gretna 4-4-0 and a picture of the prototype...

not exactly what I'm interested in, but I hope that others will like it :-/
