Greg is right.  Put the railroad on some kind of elevation (tables) and put up some kind of barrier (ropes) to keep people a arms length.  The San Diego Garden Railway has done the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar, CA for a number of years and we have had very little problem with doing this. The Fair is more than happy to have us there and keeps making sure we come back.
The people that come to the Fair love the display and some of them come back several time. I remember one young kid came back almost ever day.

I run mostly narrow gauge steam.  I do have some standard gauge steam, two diesels freight hauling locos (MoPac) and a few gasoline/diesel powered two axle locos.  More that likely I have more engines that I should but it is hard not to get a new narrow gauge steam engine when it comes out.

Make it simple. Call it "V7"

The easiest thing to do is use the reed switch that Phoenix Sound usually includes with the sound board.   Place the sound board in the tender and place the magnets on a tender wheel (I use three most times).  I know it is not in phase with the locomotive wheels but almost one will ever notice that.   I do this on all of my steam locomotives.  It will be a lot more effort (I mean a LOT) to do what you what to do.

This is a really neat locomotive.  Needless to say I like it.

The dimension drawing is OK if I wanted axle center line to axle center line but not to good for the end to end over all length.

OK  Now would someone, who has access to a Bachmann C-19, please take a tape measure and find out how long (end to end) the engine and tender is, in inches.

I am kit bashing the large scale Baldwin 2-6-6-2 and can not find out what the brown, white, orange, and yellow wires in the bunker are for.  I am putting a tender on the engine and removing the saddle tanks so it would help if I knew what these wires do.  Anyone know the answer to this question

Several years ago I was in Pioche (pronounced Pee-oach) NV.  There is an Indy 2-6-0 in a park near the Court House/County Seat/Sheriff's Office  (NV's million dollar County Seat location  from the 1800's).  I shot pictures of it and sent copies to Backmann (Bud Reece I believe).  The engine was in poor shape and could use some T.L.C.  It is almost identical to the Bachmann model.

Charles' book is very good coverage of a modern Narrow Gauge railroad.  But be careful of the dates for the last runs of steam.  SPNG had retired #8 and #9 by the dates in the book, #18 and #22 long before that.
I have talked with Charles about this dates and he has said something is wrong with them.  I have not gotten around to finding the verification, by source, for the actual dates.
I have built models of #18 and #22.  They run!!! (on my garden railroad).

This may not work for you, it works great for me but then I am not super picky.  It is so close to 4 chuffs per driver revolution You would have to run the engine very very slow to be able to tell it is not.   I put 3 magnets on a tender wheel and place the reed switch on the truck.  Using Phoenix Sound
the chuffing starts as soon as the engine moves.

I have used the LGB brushes with great success.  I made a hard wood mounting piece drilled a hole in it the size on the brush,  stick the brush in the hole in ther wood, solder the old pickup wire on, put on some adhesive on to keep the brush in place,  then bond the brust and fixture in place and no more problems.  Be sure and check the brush depth before bonding the bursh to the wood.
