HO / J Class Speed
December 26, 2023, 07:59:18 PM
I tested out the 4-8-4 J steamer (number 613) after receiving it in the mail and was surprised at how quickly it accelerated. I only had the EZ-command speed gauge up around 2/5ths of the way, and the engine was already going as fast as the top speed of a Broadway Limited Commodore Vanderbilt, which I ran side by side for comparison. I understand the Js were known as the most powerful 4-8-4s built for passenger service, and that a J would want to travel fast, but for a scale model, I don't think there would have been much harm in decreasing its max speed, especially if you're like me and working with a small 4x8' space.
HO / Wiring crossover turnouts
July 13, 2023, 11:27:27 PM
Yesterday I added a DCC single crossover turnout to a loop to create a two loop connection with a single DCC control module. However during testing the locomotive would stop upon reaching the turnout, and when I tested it again on a loop without the crossover, I came to the conclusion that it was the culprit. I assume there needs to be some special wiring so electricity can flow and provide power to the turnout. What would be the most efficient way to go about this?
Plasticville U.S.A. / Signal bridge assembly
June 27, 2023, 05:13:33 PM
The bridge assembly kit in the beginning was very easy to figure out, especially with the instructions given. The grooves in each piece made it easy to identify where the big pieces should be placed. However, once you reach the walkway, things aren't as obvious. The instructions say to push the bridge base in with a pencil, but without any grooves similar to the legs, it just falls right through the structure, not to mention the instructions don't show any motion to slide the piece anywhere. Same goes for the smaller pieces like the signal lights, which beyond placing the lights in the groove, it doesn't show how exactly the piece snaps onto the bridge. If there was a Youtube demonstration, that would make things easier.
HO / Plans for future streamliners?
June 13, 2023, 11:01:38 PM
It's no secret that the J and Gs-4 are some of the best models, and I see there's also a streamlined K4 in N scale. With many more famous streamlined steam engines that are ripe for using in a layout, could we expect another one coming soon? An easy choice would be the Hiawatha Atlantics, though since there's already a K4 in N scale, I see that as the most likely product.
