General Discussion / Sound projects for locos
June 20, 2020, 01:21:51 PM
I've recently purchased a Digitrax PR4 and downloaded the software to allow me to load sound projects into my locos.  I've successfully done that using sound files available on the Digitrax site.  But, I've got a Bauchmann 0-6-0 that I've converted to DCC using Digitrax decoders, and a Mantua 0-6-0T on my layout.  I don't like the sound alternatives for these small locos that came with the Digitrax decoder, nor the Mantua sounds.  Does anyone know where I can find sound files that can be loaded to these locos?

Where can I find shrink tubing for #26AWG wire (I believe that it should be 1/32" ID shrink to 1/64" ID)?

I saw the Display/Test Stand Rollers on Walthers site.  It gives a Bachmann part number for them, but I haven't been able to find them on Bachmann's site.  I was hoping that these would be something that I can use to test engines and other powered cars without actually putting them on a track.  Can anyone tell me how these work?  Can they be used to operate an engine while it is in one place, i.e. not rolling on a track?

HO / HO House under construction
February 22, 2019, 05:51:53 PM
I've been looking for an HO house under construction for my set-up.  Walthers and others used to have them, but I've searched recently and not found anything like this in anyone's catalog.  Any suggestions where I can find a kit?  If not I'd like to scratch build.  In that case are there any plans available that I can download?

HO / Bull Frog Snot
December 13, 2018, 05:29:35 PM
I've got a jar of Bull Frog Snot that has thickened so that I cannot apply it to loco wheels without getting lumps.  Is there any way to thin it?  If the answer is "no", then where's a good place to get traction wheels for HO locos?

General Discussion / HO Frog Juicers
April 28, 2018, 09:56:29 PM
I recently bought 2 hex frog juicers from Fast Tracks.  I'm using Bachmann EZ Track #4 Turnouts (Bachmann item no. 44558).  I cut the black wire on the underside of my turn-outs, soldered a length of wire on to it, plugged one end into the tab on the underside of the frog, and the other end to the frog juicer. On my set up with the frog juicer energized only one leg of each turnout is energized with respect to the frog, i.e. either the straight leg, or the turn leg.  Therefore my engines are going dead when using the un-energized route.  Once I give them a push to get past the turn-out they are OK until I run them back over the turnout.  Any suggestions as to how to correct this?

HO / turnout short circuits
August 16, 2017, 01:49:09 PM
I've got a DCC setup, using a Digitrax DCS-51 for control.  Whenever any of my engines gets onto a turnout track the DCS shows a short circuit (flashing  0 0 0 0 on the DCS display).  I've checked with my voltmeter and it shows normal voltage on the adjoining track (i.e. no loco problem track section) and the turnout track sections.  I've also disconnected the power and checked with my ohm meter for shorts, and found none.  Some of my turn-outs have powered frogs and some do not, but it doesn't seem to make any difference if they're powered or not.  Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

General Discussion / Mantua 0-6-0T, DCC
April 29, 2017, 07:07:38 PM
I've got a Mantua 0-6-0T DCC equipped, which has stopped working.  On the program track it reads all of its CVs with no problem, it also runs OK on a DC track (runs forward & reverse with headlamp).  However it does not respond to any commands on the DCC track, won't even turn on the head light.  I've reset it to the factory defaults, but get the same results.  Any thoughts as to what may be wrong and how to fix it?

General Discussion / Mantua 0-6-0T
April 01, 2017, 08:32:47 PM
About a year ago I purchased a Mantua 0-6-0T with DCC.  It has been a nice little yard switcher, but a couple of evenings ago it went wild, running at high speed on the layout even tho it's throttle was turned all the way down.  Then it went completely dead.  I'm sure that the decoder is gone, and I'd like to replace it, but I don't see any way to remove the shell to access it.  No help on the internet sites that I've been able to find.  Any suggestions??

General Discussion / HO Electrical Connectors
March 19, 2017, 03:23:57 PM
I'm looking for electrical connectors to connect an HO engine and tender.  I.e. to install DCC electronics in the tender, but to be able to switch tenders for the same engine.  Any recommendations on what type and where to get them?

General Discussion / Bull Frog Snot
September 18, 2016, 10:56:20 PM
I've got an engine that has had some traction problems, so I got a jar of Bull Frog Snot.  But I can't get it to stick to the driver wheels.  I've tried cleaning the wheels, application with Q-tips, tooth picks, small paint brushes, etc. but nothing works.  Any tips on how to use BFS?

HO / Life Like Diesel Engine
August 10, 2016, 01:23:38 PM
My brother recently gave me a Life Like diesel engine that he had for a while stored in his attic (don't ask about the model, that information didn't come with it).  I've cleaned it up, and it runs well, EXCEPT:  the axel housings on both the pick-up and drive wheels drag on just about anything that is higher then the ties, e.g. re-railers, turn-outs, magnetic un-couplers.  I'm thinking about sanding the housings, but I don't know how thick the plastic is.  Is there a better way to fix this problem?

HO / turnout dimensions
March 16, 2016, 01:45:19 PM
how can I get the dimensions for Bachmann HO, EZ track turnouts?  They don't have them in the catalog.  It sure would be handy for planning changes to my layout.

HO / HELP with conversion to DCC
September 06, 2015, 03:35:17 PM
I've got a small HO layout (4' x 11').  I'm thinking of converting from analog to DCC, mainly so that I can run two engines at a time, maybe run consists for pulling up a grade, and some decent sound.  I'm getting a bit confused by the information that I'm reading and would like some help.  I've got a BLI 4-8-4 that is DCC ready, , a Bachmann 4-8-4 and a Bachmann 0-6-0 both of which are currently analog only.  I've looked at Bachmann and Digitrax, and right now I'm leaning toward a Digitrax Zephyr Xtra set-up since it looks simple for a starter and has adequate capacity for my set-up. Any opinions or alternate recommendations?
I'm unsure of what to use for the decoders to convert my Bachmann engines to run on DCC. Digitrax installation manuals for their decoders seem to be very detailed and helpful, other brands not so much.  Any help here would be appreciated.
I'm confused about sound decoders.  I'd obviously want to install the decoder and speaker in the tender.  But how do I get power to it?From the engine?  If from the engine then I'd prefer to use connectors so that I can uncouple the tender from the engine when I need to perform maintenance, but where can I get the connectors?  Any recommendations on sound decoders and speakers?

Since ERail Hobbies closed down I don't have any contacts in the Tulsa, OK area for converting a Bachmann 0-6-0 engine to DCC & adding sound in the tender.  Can anybody recommend someone in the Tulsa, OK area who can do a good job for this?

General Discussion / PIKO, German Engine
October 17, 2014, 08:04:38 PM
A German friend of mine, knowing that I have a HO train set, recently sent me a new engine made by PIKO (German).  Unfortunately it is for a 3 rail power set up.  Does anyone know if there is a way to convert this to 2 rail power?

General Discussion / Spectrum Compatibility
February 23, 2014, 06:32:21 PM
I've got an HO analog set-up, and am running a Broadway Limited 4-8-4 with a BL DC Master controller for sound.  I'm not quite ready to upgrade to DCC but have been looking at a Bachmann Spectrum equipped steam engine.  Is Bachmann Spectrum compatible with the BL DC Master for controlling sounds?

HO / Freight cars for steam engines
October 20, 2013, 10:01:15 PM
I'm modeling in HO steam engines.  I'd like to get freight cars from the 20's, 30's, 40's period.  All cars that I see advertised are modern day.  Where can I find cars from the period that I am modeling?

HO / HO #5 Turnouts
July 21, 2013, 06:53:51 PM
Recently got a pair of Bachmann E-Z Track #5 HO turnouts (right & left).  Two problems that I haven't quite figured out:

1) the side track is so short that I have to notch out the first section of adjoining E-Z track to get it to fit.  Is it designed this way or am I just missing something?
2) I'm trying to set up a passing siding parallel to my main line, but the angle of the side track is such that using standard 30 degree bend sections will not fit (It works with my other turnouts).  Again, is there something that I'm missing here?

General Discussion / loose turnouts
November 25, 2012, 09:46:49 PM
I've got all Backman EZ track on my layout.  The rivets that hold the moveable rails to the switch mechanism are coming loose on all of my turnouts.  What's the recommended way to fix this, either to prevent it from happening, or to repair it when it does happen?

Also. I looked at some Kato turnouts on a plastic road bed, similar to EZ Track in the hobby shop over the weekend.  These looked to be much better made then the Bachman turnouts that I have (also more expensive).  I asked if they are compatible with EZ Track, but no one in the store knew.  Any opinions on these?  Can they be used with EZ Track?
