HO / Re: Cannot Change the Loco address
March 17, 2015, 01:35:11 PM
Hunt,
You da man. Thanks a million. I managed to get it to address 1000. But the moment i try to re address it to 1[that's the loco # i want] it goes back to #3. But that's ok. No big deal. I'll stick to #1000. At least my #3 is freed up.
Can you tell me the secret of this "rabbit you pulled out of the hat" trick?
Thanks again.

Len, been there done that. I had read it too from the manual but no luck. I'm scared to try it with my other engines lest i get them stuck in some other address especially 3. I can change the accl, tv, dccl, and sv of the decoder on the main track but not the address.
Hunt, i don't have the SYS button on my controller. i think it comes only on the Advance and advance squared. and thankfully i dont have any dcc turnouts.LOL.

A general question to both of you, Should there no be a momentary voltage to the program track when link light flashes and the handheld flashes SEND? I have attached my meter to the prog track and at no time do i get any voltage reading.

Thanks.

Hi Hunt,
To answer your questions.
1] I do not know the version of my MRC Express. Its really old about 8yrs min. Is there a way to check the version?
2] I use non sound economy decoders Bachmann. I think in another post of mine, you said they were in collaboration with Lenz.
3] It has been reset to address 3 by using CV 8 value 8.
4] I'm trying to change it to address 1 or 0001[does it mean the same?]
5] I tried it on both Main Track and Programming Track.

Thanks.

Hi all,
After 6 long years i'm facing this problem again. I tried everything Jim suggested and unlike 6 years ago i am still not able to change the loco address on the program track or main track. Even when the command station sends a command i do not get any voltage reading for that moment.
Anyone facing this issue?
Thanks.

Hi All,
Joe, you hit the nail on the head with your suggestion. I swapped decoders and once again came out tops. The supposedly faulty decoder is doing great in another loco and the K4-6-2 is doing great again with the swapped decoder. So i am back in business and have stored my spare decoder away for a rainy day. This is one really weird phenomenon. I installed a MRC decoder in the K4-6-2.

Hunt, thanks for all the suggestions which shows that so many things can be the reason for a problem like this.
Appreciate your info on the Lenz Decoder and the CV's. Can those two CV's and values be changed at the same time or do i have to do it one at a time? Does it need to be done only on a program track? or can i do it on the main track [I can remove all my other loco's]. The reason i'm asking is coz there seems to be a problem with my "Prog Track function" on my MRC.

Len and Electrical Whiz Kid, thanks for your suggestions too. They are the other possibilities to consider for a problem like this. Appreciate it.

Hi Guys,
I just replaced the decoder with a spare one i had and Hey Presto !!! we are in business.
Everything back to normal. Joe, i guess your option 1 was the culprit.
I was just wondering instead of tossing away the decoder if i could reset it and see if i could salvage it. Coz in India a $20 decoder costs $40, so any chance of keeping it is a bonus.
I have the MRC Prodigy Express but i'm not sure what make the decoder is. Anybody have any ideas? Its the Bachman K462 Spectrum. Engine is about 6 yrs old.
            Thanks.

Joe and Hunt,
Thanks for the quick reply's. My mistake i did not furnish you with all details.
I have 6 other steamers pulling the same rolling stock that run on the same layout but there is no drop in Voltage.
I have run the 4-6-2 by itself and removed all other engines from the layout including lighted rolling stock. I've unplugged the tender wires and cleaned the terminals with isopropyl alcohol. The only thing not done is open up the tender.
Could it be that the decoder has finally decided to call it quits?
Thanks.

HO / Voltage Drop
March 08, 2015, 01:37:34 PM
Hi All,
Just a question about an issue that has me baffled. I've got a Bachman K4-6-2 DCC onboard engine. Has been working really well for the past 6 years. Lately i've found a voltage drop eveytime i start her up. The drop remains and increases as i increase the throttle. Track voltage is 14V. Drops to 12V at 1/4th throttle to 1/2 throttle. Drops to 10V at full throttle. This is with about 8 rolling stock and by itself as well. Any ideas? I have lubed all the gears, rods and wheels. Thanks.

The drive shaft from the motor to the front wheels has probably worked itself loose. i have had this problem before.

That's great, i enjoy experimenting with my engines regarding CV's and all. So i guess this decoder is going to give me more to do. Thanks for your replies.

Great Hunt thanks, that answers my question. I saw them for around 15$ apiece which i think is an excellent price. Do you have any preferred settings for the torque compensation. Thanks once again.

Does anyone use the NCE D13SR or the D13SRJ decoder? I have seen them online for a very good price. One of the specifications says Torque compensation. Is it the same as back EMF? Thanks.

HO / Decoder test and reset
February 13, 2011, 10:36:10 PM
Hi Can anybody tell me how to test a decoder and reset it.
Basic Lenz decoder put in the Bachmann Loco's.
I am not sure if it works. Don't want to test it in a Loco as it might burn out the motor. If it does work i want to reset it back to #3 as i cannot remember the address i had assigned it earlier. Thanks.
