what is a motorized climax i found one on http://www.steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=5330 and was wondering how it is done what it exactly is?

I believe this is an old steam Climax which is now operated by an internal combustion engine.

That is correct.  A local logging company had a deisel powered shay and a Dunkirk.

From a Google search, some where later converted to diesel or gasoline power.  Very few photos available from what I found. The OP's photo the only one I have seen so far.
The engine was coupled to the original gears. Look up the drives used on these locos when they used steam power. They had quite a lot of gear reduction. Some had two speed transmission while running on steam.
Geared locos when running about 10 mph, usually about their max speed, sounded like they where going much faster. Think of what a diesel powered dozer sounds like pushing dirt compared to a diesel powered truck on the open road.

As steam was fading out, several uwers of geared locomotives  removed part or all of theboiler anmd installed diesengines.  Simplest  drive was to ling the engine /transmission to the line shaft using a chain and sprockets.  Heisler actually built a siesel locomotive. gj

thanks for all the help guys i just thought this would be a very interesting locomotive for an early transition era and also i meant to say motorized.

For Mr Shay,I agrre 100% on your comment about John Allen and the great G&D,a real shame its gone.I also think theres another fellow who deserves alot of credit for more or less taking the hobby to new heights,Malcom Furlow accomplised things we never even dreamed of,I think he raised the bar more than once!Just wonder where he is and why you see nothing from him?I heard he had a major fallout we a train mag and stopped modeling.

actually i was thinking all the great model railroaders need a museum i liked  John Allen, John Olsen and Malcolm Furlow i know what happened to John Allen but what happened to Malcolm Furlow because i liked the freelanced disneyish layouts that they made. i think there just needs to be a model railroad museum in Wisconsin because that's were i hear a lot of model railroaders are. also i think Bachmann needs to make john Allen RR equipment like MDC did.
