I would second the suggestion of MTL couplers. If you don't want to change out all your equipment to Micro-Trains, just put an MTL coupler on the front of one freight can and always run it with the SD45.

I repeat myself, but why not check out the photos on this very website?

NYC is coming. Check the Walthers website for a photo of the new NYC run. How come such photos are not posted here?

EDIT: OK, I see now that the NYC units are pictured in the Products section. Note the knuckle couplers.

N / Re: New Bachmann can motors - substandard?
August 21, 2009, 11:18:14 AM
If the issue seems to be only with the 2-6-6-2's, because of the heavy load (and we know that running motors under heavy load / high voltage wears them out faster), you probably don't need to worry about the Centennials, since they have two motors.

These things are still a couple of months away, according to previously posted Bachmann information. The arrival announcement nelow must have been meant for the HO Forum, since the HO models have indeed arrived.

There are small photos in the products section here. I copied to my computer, sharpened, and I can see that the models have finer detail and good paint jobs, but the pilot and truck are still one swiveling unit. I guess we knew all that anyway.

This isn't going to work, unless the GP40 mechanism and/or the F7A body ("shell") is way out of scale to the right degree. The F7 is considerably shorter.

Time to bump this topic back to page 1. Some of us really want a PRR K4s--prewar and postwar versions. We have the GG1 (Kato), we have the Big Boy and Challenger (Athearn), we have the SP GS4. We have some diesel models of locos that only a handful of proto railroads ever owned (SD26, DL109, etc). It's time for a PRR K4s (Bachmann)!

Victor Miranda posted a photo of the underside of the shell on the Atlas Forum, and it looks like the 2004 may be the best bet, as TCWORLD suggests. The problem will be whether the coupler box clears the truck frames.

N / Re: F7A/B Speed Difference
May 19, 2009, 12:38:00 PM
I suggest running both units (separately at first) to allow them to break in. It could be that the B unit needs more break-in time. If that doesn't help, then maybe someone else has some ideas. If nothing else helps, however, you could always switch shells (and front trucks & light board) and make the B unit the faster one.

N / Any changes in the new Spectrum F7's?
April 27, 2009, 09:02:26 AM
Judging from the photo on the Walthers website, the upcoming NYC F7 looks pretty good! It has the new dummy knuckle couplers, but I'm wondering if there have been any modifications of the mechanism. Has it been revamped? Could you find out, Mr. B.?

Also, how about some new photos in the Photo Gallery of all these upcoming models?   Thanks.

Here's an illustration of an AEM7--in this case, New Jersey Transit.
It does resemble a popup toaster in some ways.

I think there may have been two additional contributing factors to the Atlas AEM lack of sales. (1) Not much contemporary passenger equipment was available at the time of its release. Subsequently Bachmann has come out with both the Acela and the HHP8. (2) Atlas could not offer the AEM7 as part of a set. A lot of purchasers (especially beginners) are attracted to train sets.

But, to keep this on the main topic (and to keep the thread alive), this is what we're mainly interested in here:

I don't want to badger Bachmann about this, but I'm getting old and I'd like a few years' enjoyment of some N scale K4s's. To add a bit more "sales pitch" I just point out that one K4s (r/n 5409) was painted Tuscan Red for a few months in 1929. That's outside most modelers' eras, but I bet some folks would buy one just for the joy of it.

Since the K4s's often ran double headed, there would be more of a demand for these things than most single steam locomotive models. The success of Athearn's Big Boy (which in real life only operated in a specific region--and only on UP) should be a good indicator that a K4s would sell well. And if Bachmann offered a non-Belpair boiler version (with, say, a medium or large USRA tender) they could probably get away with other road names.
