General Discussion / Re: Cheap Laptops

Bob,

I remember the original windows. I even had a "windowing" program before that. My first was the Timex Sinclair ZX81 with 16k of memory. I spent many evening typing in the machine code from the back of programming books. My first bought program was a flight simulator that too 30 minutes to load off of a cassette player. That computer cost $300. My next machine was an Apple IIc that cost about $2000 and had a floppy disk drive. In my office I have a Kaypro and that Timex.

Ok, bought the "special edition model railroader" Bookazine. 2 pictures of "Steubenville." One could be anywhere on the east coast, the other is actually the train yard in Mingo Junction. There are a couple of photos of a station.

If you want to model steubenville, save the eight bucks...here's what you need.

1. River (wide, brown, dirty, fast) That's your eastern border.
2. Coal fields. (Western border)
3. Steel mill (Huge...BOF, EAF, Casters, Tin Mill, Rolling mill. Make sure half of it looks shut down. )That is your southern border. From river to about halfway west. Sould take up 1/2 of town.
4.  Pottery Northen border.

Double track along river east of town. Single track right through middle of town. Road passes under track.

Fill town with bars, pizza shops, churches, and a bordello called "Judy Jordan's" right in middle of town. Yes, next to track.

If you are doing anything modern, time wise, add a Walmart at W end.

Need pics....just ask!

Has anyone got any experiences with this place. I'm thinking of placing an order, but I don't really like surprises. How long to ship? Items ok? Customer service quality? Those kinds of things. Thanks in advance for any help you may give.

Bob,

The ad is on page 84 of the May 2008 Model Ralroader. It says you can order the book via this link www.modelrailroader.com/mr4

It is a browser or HTML issue. I use Firefox on XP Pro. I have no problems. I just tried one of the posts you mentioned with IE and had the same issue.

General Discussion / Re: DCC Booster

My bad, Yampa Bob. I did not realize that a separate power supply for the booster was required. A booster can not be had for under $100.

Have any of you seen the ads for this "book" from Model railroader?
It advertises "Modeling the Railroad Town of Steubenville, Ohio"

Huh?

That's where I live. I never knew I lived in a "railroad town." Sure the Norfolk Southern tracks are less than 400 feet from my back door, and there is a yard on the outskirts of town. But never thought of it as a railroad town.

Anyway...if any of you decide to try this and need some photos, just let me know and I will be happy to snap 'em!

HO / Re: Help with Dynamis DCC turnouts
April 25, 2008, 07:01:51 PM
Your DCC compatable turnouts will be at the same address you had them on for the EZ Command. I think that you accessed #9 and used Functions 1-8. So on the Dynamis you would call up Loco #9 and access functions 1-8. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

DCC doesn't care if the decoder is in a loco or a stationary unit. Call up the address and access the fuctions.

So Grumpy,

You are saying that I can just put in a larger capacity power supply in place of the wall wart that I got from Bachmann?
