The socket adapter board that has wires can be easily connected to any control device.  The requirements of the locomotives with a socket is that you must provide DC power to the locomotive and power to control the motor.  A plus is the ability to control the extra lighting functions.

Airwire devices can easily do all three.

The decoder will fit.

However not sure that the decoders amperage is suitable for the large Pittman motor in the C-19.  I would ask Soundtraxx  for clarification before installing it.

Zimo and Phoenix also make plug in decoders with sound for the C-19.

Hope that helps

That is the Axle for the LS  2-8-0  It will not work in the LS 4-4-0  For the 4-4-0 you need the Motor, gearbox, and axle for the 2017 2-6-0

Sorry  read your original message wrong.  Please call service and ask for a 2017 2-6-0 Motor gear box and axle.  I am not sure it is still in stock or not but worth a try.

The 2017 drive has metal gears.

I have found that sometimes the Bachmann online store has things that are out of stock.

Try ordering the following

https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_142&products_id=10285&zenid=mpsh94vi5sg22e9igmleikbjf4

This is the Axle and Gear for the 2-8-0

An alternative is a gear made by NWSL.  If you can not get the Bachmann gear I have several of the NWSL gears I will not be using.  If interested send me a message offline.

Bill

Bachmann only produced a C-19 in 1:20.3.  My belief is that this is the best steam locomotive produced by any manufacturer in Large Scale.

The only C-16 I know of in 1:20.3 is the one done by Accucraft.

Large / Re: Adding sound to three truck shay
September 27, 2018, 08:10:15 PM
Let me see if I can help.

In the parts section there is a sound decoder for the 3 truck shay.

https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_143&products_id=10457&zenid=udab5f1qhv5qhr000oa1oqnse4

This is the identical decoder that is in the sound version.

On one end of this product are 4 screw terminals used for the track input and motor output.  On the board in the shay's fuel bunker there are a set of screw terminals. You need to look at both the DC wiring and DCC wiring.  You need to unscrew the specified wires and move them to the decoder which should be mounter under the main board.

At the other end of the decoder there is a socket.   You unplug a corresponding plug on the main board and plug this into the decoder's socket.  I think there are a couple other wires that need to move from one screw terminal to another as specified in the DC and DCC wiring.

Some cautions

1)  The wiring in the 3 truck shay are small and easily broken.  Care must be taken not to break wires off the main board.  (been there done that)

2)  This an old decoder product and will only work up to about 19 volts DCC.  If your DCC system puts out higher volts you will need to lower the input voltage to the decoder or it will not work.

Hope that helps.

Couple of quick questions.

1) what do you have in the socket?

2) what is the position of the switches behind the smokebox door.

DCC  Decoder Common + is a DC plus voltage about 1.5 colts less than the DCC track voltage.  Connect this to Locomotive +

The Train Bus connections on the socket are for future expansion.  They are not currently used by the Bachmann locomotives.

Hope that helps

Plug an play products are the easiest to install in locomotives with a socket.  Just plug them in.

To use any wired sound decoder you need a minimum of 8 wires to connect between the socket in the locomotive (tender)

1) the two track wires

2) the two motor wires

3) the decoders + and - must be connected to the sockets + and -

4) the two speaker wires.

Additional wires are needed for the chuff, and functions (lights/smoke/...) but these need not be connected till everything else is working.

Your Bachmann locomotive manual describes each wire (pin) and its function.

For a DCC decoder to work on DC the decoder must have CV29 set to work on DC.  Most all come from the factory this way.

Also make sure the switches in the locomotive are set for motor on and for track power.

I can not tell you how many times I have forgotten the last step.

When you are using the dummy plug with wires you must install the motor connections to some sort of motor control and provide a DC voltage source to the +- wires.   A DCC decoder or a RC control system have these connections

If you are using DC I would recommend using the DC board that was in the socket when you got the locomotive.

The pins are labeled and you can easily wire your sound card to this board.

Alternatively you can wire the your sound card directly to the track solder pads on the main board in the tender.

Hope that helps.

Fortunately only the sound version of the 3 truck shay has this issue.  In mine I use rectifiers to lower the input voltage to a level tat the sound level likes.

Hope that helps

You can replace the LEDs in the class lights with white LEDs.  Myself I got used to them as on most trains they are not on.

On the SJR&P eastbound (uphill) is a near constant 2% to 2.5% for about 1200 ft.

We limit the K-27 to 9 loads (cars) plus caboose and the C-19 for 8 loads plus caboose.

These ratings are conservative to ensure that the train will not bog down.  If additional cars need to be moved in a train extra locomotives are required.

Only one device can be placed in the socket at a time.

The jumper board with wires was designed to be used with a device that has motor control, and provided DC power.

To get the lights to work you must provide DC power to the locomotive.  No DC voltage to the locomotive no lights

The simplest way to install the sierra board is to use the DC dummy board as described in a message I posted on June 4th at 8PM.  This requires you solder two wires to the DC jumper board. plus connect the speaker.

If you desire to use the board with wires then the installation is more complex as it requires you to figure out a way to supply DC voltage to the locomotive.
