HO / Re: software for design tracks ?
August 17, 2009, 06:44:37 PM
Pierre,

I also use Anyrail and find it far better than the Alas software and much easier to use than any of the CAD type software.  And for your benefit Anyrail is published by a French company.

Robert,

The gap in the red square is nothing to give concern. As with any joint between sections, if you run a finger across the gap the rail ends should be level showing that the joiners are 'engaged' correctly.

May be 'sonic' welded but only in spots, not continuously. Have separated every piece of track from an On30 train set. Hold the piece in both hands by the ends and twist in opposite directions to and fro a couple of times. This will break the end welds and sometimes the intermediate ones. Lift one end of track away from base and run a narrow blade screwdriver along under tie strip under each rail to break any remaining welds. After a few you get the 'knack'.

Ray,

Have not seen Iain Rice's latest book on Shelf Layouts. Suggest that you also look at his previous "Small,Smart and Practical Track Plans", especially the piece on "Industrial Switching Lines". All plans are round the wall type with some having individual "scenes"which could be lifted.

General Discussion / Re: Cardstock Structures

One advantage is that signs and posters can be added on PC rather than later.

Rear walls are cut so that building overhangs track to partially hide hole in backdrop.  Piece cut from backdrop is mounted on foam and replaced at angle to help prevent black hole effect.
In foreground is an Evergreen kit gas station.

Printed card can also be used for Boxcabs, Passenger and frt. cars.

Some of my expanding fleet of printed card sided reefers mounted on Bach flats or scratch chassis. Future builds will use the new Bach underframes. Caboose is combination of two Chivers cars on stretched chassis.

Ray,

The difference is that now the materials can come ready printed.

Some years ago I obtained a HO card set of "Canyon City" by Schreiber-Bogen. Using the PC, I cut and pasted parts of scanned copies and printed out in O scale.

The two buildings on the right were generated this way while the left hand pair were "hand generated" using various graphics software.

Has anyone a site for Dover--would like to see what they have. Now that I have an A3 size printer,I can print out whole cards and do the cut and paste with my knife.

HO / Re: Minimum Radius curves - a follow-up
August 12, 2009, 06:16:46 AM
Prototypical?
Suggest nothing under 48"(not 18)for HO. Had an N scale folded dogbone layout with some 9 & 3/4" curves and ran anything including Mallets with no trouble.

Bob,
It's your RR and you use what you need to fit your space. Just pick suitable stock and ENJOY.

Byron,

"DCC ready" can mean only that the motor is isolated, or that it has a PCB with a socket ready for a decoder---which may not help as some decoders are not fitted with plugs.
DCC equipped locos are variously described as "with DCC", "DCC fitted" or "DCC onboard".

As regards DCC generally--it is not as "standardized" as it should be. Some manufacturers have used various loopholes to do their own thing in a number of ways.

A little correction.
Some locos are fitted with SOCKETS.
Some decoders are fitted with PLUGS.
You can't plug a plug into a plug.

A more up to date version of the guide is in Files on either of the On30 Conspiracy or the On30 groups on Yahoo.

Tyler,

A xx degree piece of track can be any radius--the larger the radius, the longer the track piece.
Radius of curve is given as xx INCHES.  xx degrees shows the segment of a 360 degree circle that a curved piece of setrack  covers and allows you to work out the number of pieces needed for a half or full circle.

Ray,

Suggest you take a look at a Bachmann, or Model Power,  MDT Plymouth 6 wheel diesel since money is a consideration.

GREAT  8) to see the 0n30 skidder being produced in 1:20.3!

The original Skidder was in HO and is not available in On30 (wish it was).
