Checking our records, your set is one of Bachmann's very first HO train sets.

It was first shown in our catalog in 1970, the first year we catalogued HO scale trains, and stayed in the catalog for the next two years.

While we can't give an appraisal of its value, it's definitely a classic!

I believe both headlights being on by default is specific to this prototype. You can adjust the behavior using Audio Assist or CV settings.

Bachmann doesn't have a Roundhouse designed to fit our N scale turntable, but you may be able to adapt another manufacturer's building.

Donald and Douglas are currently out of stock, so we deactivated the web store listing. However, they are not discontinued and should be back later this year.

Yes, the 78998 magnetic coupler is designed to be used with E-Z Track. All you have to do is place it under the roadbed on a straight section of track.

If you follow the track layout as shown with the pieces included, and place the piers where each piece of track connects, so that they support the pieces evenly, it should be able to stay standing.

While we don't have any record of a Bachmann set named "Pacific Express", I have a photo of this set "Empire Builder" that matches your description:


This set was in the Bachmann catalog from 1989 to 1993. The Union Pacific GP18 seems to have been included in a few uncatalogued sets from this time period. It was not originally a Bachmann product; it was manufactured by Mehano and first imported by AHM, then by Bachmann after AHM went out of business.

The headlight staying on after the locomotive is removed from the track is normal, because of the Keep Alive device installed. Since it is designed to keep the engine moving even if power is interrupted due to dirty track and other conditions, the headlight will stay on until the electric charge stored in the Keep Alive is spent.

As for the headlight staying on, are you having any other issues such as other lights not turning on or off, sound not functioning, etc.? Also, have you tried configuring in Light Mode?

The dimensions of our E-Z Track Figure 8 Track Pack (item no. 44487), with 18" radius curves, is 39" x 76". So it will be a very tight fit inside your O-27 oval, but it is possible.
